To achieve your skincare goals, you should know the biggest mistakes to avoid. To make sure that you are taking care of your skin and to know what bad habits are preventing you from putting your best face and body forward. I am also guilty of these mistakes, but once I realized what I am doing wrong, my skin started to improve, and I know that once you realized what you are doing wrong you’ll start to see improvement in your skin.
1. No Sunblock
Sunblock is not only for the summer months but you’ll need it or all year round because not wearing sunblock every day can cause skin damage, uneven skin tone, aging signs, and can even lead to skin cancer. Just remember when looking for a sunblock that you’ll find suitable for your skin, it needs to be at least 30 SPF for your skin to be protected from the sun.
2. Popping Pimples
Popping your pimple might be tempting, but popping or squeezing your pimple will only spread the bacteria and create an even worst outbreak as it contains infected pus. You’ll also end up delaying your body natural healing process and breaking your skin barrier, that you’ll risk having permanent acne scars. This is why patience is the key, and let your pimple disappear on its own.
3. Taking Hot Showers
Hot showers are so relaxing but taking long hot showers will strip your body oils and will dry out your skin that could worsen certain skin conditions like eczema. However, if you want to take hot showers, it is important to not take long hot showers. Besides, cold showers have benefits too. It could increase your circulation, can give your hair and skin a healthy glow, and it could boost weight loss.
4. Falling for Social Media Tips and Tricks
It is always important to not always trust social media that is loaded with skincare tips and tricks. Some of these tips and tricks are made to promote products that are advertised as a miracle cure to your skincare problem. However, miracle cures don’t exist, and a lot of surgery and Photoshop are done to make you believe them. Just remember that everyone has unique skincare needs and goals, and not all products that worked for a certain person will work for you.
5. Forgetting that your Skin is an Organ too
A lot of people tend to forget that the skin is an organ too. It is your largest organ. Just like your heart, lungs, and other organs in your body it needs to be looked after too. It is essential to your general health, and if you take care of it properly it can also take care of you.
6. Keeping Sweaty and Wet Clothes On
It’s important to change immediately and not let that sweaty and wet clothing on your body for too long. Because wet and sweaty clothing can trap dust and dirt, that will clog your pores which will often lead to breakout and body odor.
7. Skipping your Neck when Moisturizing
Your neck is one of the first areas in your body to show signs of aging because its skin is thinner and more prone to wrinkling. Plus, unlike your face, your neck is naturally oil-free which makes it dry. This is why you need to give your neck some love too and don’t make it a habit to stare at your phone while bending your neck downwards. It is one of the causes of double chin and text neck.
8. Over-exfoliating
Always be careful when your exfoliating because it’s easy to over-exfoliate your skin when it is feeling dry. Over-exfoliating can also cause tiny tears in your skin leading to a rash-like texture and uneven tone. It can also cause your skin to become dry, leading to breakouts and small rough bumps on your face.
9. Using Alcohol
When you need to clean an injury, it is better to use a gentle soap and water. Don’t use alcohol because it will only harm the tissues of your skin. However, in skincare, you should be careful if you have sensitive, dry, or eczema-prone skin because using skincare products that contain alcohol can be drying and damaging for your skin. Always be sure to double-check the ingredients or consult a dermatologist first before adding a new product to your skincare routine.
10. Skipping Moisturizers
Whether your skin is dry, oily, or normal you shouldn’t skip your moisturizer as it plays a much bigger role in your skincare routine. It delays fine lines and wrinkles, reduces acne breakouts and it acts as a second barrier for your skin.
11. Touching your Face too much
Touching your face is something that most of us are guilty of, that once it becomes a habit it is a struggle to leave behind. Plus, touching your face is a big no-no, your hands contain a lot of bacteria that are not visible in the eye, and touching your face can spread dirt, oil, and bacteria from your hands to your face. Which are the cause of breakouts and clogged pores.
12. Too many Skin Care Products
Trying new products can be tempting. However, it is important to see what works for you, and stick to it, because having good basic skincare is so much better, it is shorter and less expensive. While using, multiple products can be expensive and negative reactions will be hard to trace back if you use a lot of products simultaneously.
Plus, most ingredients will take at least 4-6 weeks of consistent use before the noticeable change, so it’s important to stick to it first before you judge if the product is suitable for you or not.
13. Not Washing and Removing your Makeup before Bed
When you’re exhausted, it can be tempting to just sleep. However, not washing your face, and not removing your makeup before bed could put you at risk for an infection, such as acne, and rashes. If you don’t cleanse your face, dirt and dead skin cells are not removed, and would eventually lead to a breakdown of the skin barrier and premature aging.
