Picking the right dress for the right occasion can sometimes be a challenge.
Sometimes it is straightforward enough. If you’re going to a wedding, you want to look classy, not showy to overshadow the bride, but not dowdy and plain. For a night disco dancing, something hot and statement-making is in order, whilst a little league game with other Moms calls for comfort and practicality. That’s all straightforward enough, but what about situations where the choice is a little more ambiguous?
We’re talking here about a poker game. Poker is experiencing something of a renaissance at the moment, thanks to lots of factors coming together. Actress Jessica Chastain is right up there in terms of female style icons. Her depiction of poker fixer Molly Bloom in Molly’s Game has doubtless helped expand poker’s appeal beyond the accepted demographic of largely male players. Other stylish women, such as Shannon Elizabeth, have also enjoyed bringing poker to women’s doors.
However, what would you wear if you were asked to play poker tomorrow? We’ve got some suggestions for styles here.
Casual
When playing competitive poker, casual is king. Poker can take many hours, and often you’ll need to be in something as comfortable as you can. Whilst a hoodie and comfortable pants are acceptable; you don’t have to be dressing down. A simple plain top, such as a shirt or blouse, will leave you looking classy but also comfortable at the same time. Even a pair of jeans and sneakers combined with a top can make you feel good about how you look and still be comfortable at the table. If you so desire, you might even throw on a pair of dark glasses to mask your tells from other players.
Elegant
You don’t have to dress down for poker; you can be as elegant and overstated as you wish, which could help you win. Knowing how to win at poker is not just about the hand rankings, pot odds, and such; it’s about diverting attention from one aspect of yourself to another. People might not notice your tells if you’re wearing an off-the-shoulder evening gown and heels or a little black dress. They might be looking at you, but are they seeing? If your clothes are taking their eye away from your tells, then you’re one step ahead already. Just remember to be as comfortable as possible too.
Themed
This might call for a little preparation beforehand, but why not suggest a themed event if you’re playing a local poker game with friends? It takes the stress out of your outfit choice, as everyone will be looking to dress the same way! Our picture example shows players on St Patrick’s Day, but you can choose any theme. Super Bowl will be coming up in February; perhaps a sports-themed poker game would be good? The trick here is to make sure everyone is on the same page; you don’t want to be the only one in themed dress as you might feel like you stick out. Mind you, on the other hand; it would take attention away from your tells if you had a green wig and tights on!
